Dear members of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP),

Hope this message finds you well.  We all truly look forward to the Summer 2022 ISCP Shanghai International Conference (postponed from 2021 due to Covid-19) as opportunities to learn from one another and making personal connections.  However, considering the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, the difficulty and safety of international traveling (visa, pre-boarding test, quarantine, flight availability and high cost associated with it, etc.), in consultation with the hosting university (East China Normal University), the board has approved holding the conference with a hybrid platform — virtual and in person concurrently.  For participants within the Mainland China and scholars outside of China who can and would like to travel to Shanghai, they certainly can participate the conference in person. For those who prefer to participate virtually, they can do so.

The conference registration fee will be lowered because of this new hybrid format.  For non-ISCP members, the conference registration fee will be US$50 (approx. RMB300￥); for ISCP members whose dues are paid up to date, it will be free.  We encourage current members to renew their membership and interested colleagues to join ISCP to take advantage of this generous offer.

With this new hybrid platform, we also hope more scholars will consider submitting individual abstract or panel proposals for the conference. The submission deadline is DECEMBER 31, 2021.

THE CHARLES WEI-HSUN FU FOUNDATION-ISCP
2022 ESSAY CONTEST

The Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Foundation and the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) are pleased to announce the 2022 Essay Contest in Chinese Philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought.
Three prizes of $2,000 each are offered for the best essays in the area of Chinese philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought, including two awards for graduate students or junior faculty (within five years of receipt of their Ph.D.), one each in Chinese and English, as well as one award for a senior scholar, whose essay can be in either Chinese or English.
All awardees are required to attend the 2022 Shanghai conference of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (June 27-30, 2022), hosted by East China Normal University, to present their winning essays.
Funding (up to $1000) also will be provided for the winners to travel to the 2022 biennial ISCP conference at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China.
ELIGIBILITY
The contest is open to all ISCP members and scholars at all levels, including independent scholars. However, preference will be given to junior scholars beginning their careers, such as graduate students or junior faculty (within five years of receipt of their Ph.D.), as well as independent scholars of comparable standing, and one senior scholar in need of funding to attend the conference. SUBMISSIONS
All submissions should be sent to iscpecnu2021@sina.com, with “Fu Essay Contest” in the subject line. Decisions will be rendered by separate panels of scholars, drawn from the membership of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy. Previously published papers are not acceptable. Submissions in English should not exceed 5,000 words; submission in Chinese should not exceed 7,000 words. DEADLINE: March 1, 2022.

JUDGING CRITERIA
The purpose of the contest is to encourage young scholars who show promise of making important contributions to the study and development of Chinese philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought, and to fund senior scholars with financial limitations to present their work at ISCP conferences.
Submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1. CREATIVITY: original philosophical insights, such as East-West comparisons
2. COHERENCE: a cogent, well-argued presentation
3. SCHOLARSHIP: competence in dealing with philosophical texts and interpretations

Call for Papers

Due to the global impact of the COVID-19, the 22nd International Conference of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) has been postponed from July 2021 to June 27–30, 2022. The postponement is based on careful consideration of the health, safety, and wellbeing of all the attendees of the Conference held at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China. The Conference is hosted by ISCP, the Institute of Modern Chinese Thought & Culture at ECNU, the Department of Philosophy at ECNU, and the Shanghai Association of Comparative Study on Chinese-Western Philosophy and Culture. Please find below information on the new extended deadlines for submissions and registration.

Conference Theme
The conference theme is “Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of World Philosophy.” Following the spread of Western philosophy in the East and the encounter between Chinese and Western thought, Chinese philosophy started gaining a global perspective. Broadly speaking, “globalness” includes two significant implications. On the one hand, the accumulated achievements of Chinese philosophical thought may provide constructive theoretical resources for the further advancement of world philosophy; furthermore, in this process Chinese philosophy itself will gradually reveals its global meaning. On the other hand, other philosophical traditions in the world (firstly, the Western philosophical traditions), also provide a broad referencing and perspectival viewpoints for the development of Chinese philosophy. Moreover, both in substance and in form, the other philosophical traditions continuously enable Chinese philosophy to obtain new forms of expression, which alternatively manifests both the creativeness and the openness of Chinese philosophy. An unavoidable issue in the study of Chinese philosophy concerns how to care, and learn from, the wisdom of other philosophical traditions and resources, while at the same time exhibiting its own unique significance in today’s world. The 22nd conference of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy aims to advance this line of thinking.
Under the general theme of “Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of World Philosophy,” the subthemes include, but are not limited to, the following:

The official dates are June 27-30, 2022. Registration begins on June 26 and conference participants can depart on July 1.

Submission Guidelines
1. The conference languages are both English and Chinese. Unless otherwise indicated, the language of the proposal submitted will be assumed to be the presentation language.
2. English abstracts should be 250 to 300 words; Chinese abstracts should be around 400-500 characters. Abstracts should include paper title, author’s name, affiliation, and email contact information.
3. Panel submissions (including “Author-Meets-Critics” sessions) should include the topic, panelists and their affiliations, a summary of the proposed panel in 300-500 words (English) or 800-1000 characters (Chinese), and an abstract for each of the papers (250–300 words for papers in English and 400-500 words for papers in Chinese).
4. Please submit individual abstracts and panel proposals by December 31, 2021 to: iscpecnu2021@sina.com

Arrangement of Sessions
(1) Each plenary session will have two speakers and will run for a total of 2 hours, including moderation, comments and discussion. Each presentation will consist of a 40-minute speech and 20 minutes for comments and discussion.
(2) Each parallel session will have 3-5 speakers in 2 hours. Generally, the presenting time for each speaker will be 20-25 minutes. The exact time will depend on the precise number of speakers in the session and will be determined by the chair while maintaining sufficient time for discussion.

受欧美疫情的严重影响，原定于2021年7月举行的第22届国际中国哲学大会将延期至2022年6月27-30日，在上海华东师范大学举行。本次大会由国际中国哲学会(ISCP，International Society for Chinese Philosophy)、华东师范大学中国现代思想文化研究所、华东师范大学哲学系、上海中西哲学与文化比较研究会等单位共同主办。本次大会的论文征集时间将作相应推迟。

会议主题
第22届国际中国哲学大会会议的主题是“世界哲学视域中的中国哲学”。随着西方哲学的东渐及中西哲学的相遇，中国哲学开始获得世界性的维度。所谓世界性，宽泛而言，包含二重涵义，一方面，中国哲学所积累的思维成果，可以为世界哲学的进一步发展提供建设性的理论资源，而它本身也将在这一过程中逐渐呈现出世界的意义；另一方面，世界范围内其他哲学传统（首先是西方哲学的传统）也将越来越为中国哲学的发展提供更广阔的参照背景和视域，并在实质的层面与形式的层面使其不断取得新的形态，后者同时从另一个方面展示了中国哲学的生成性与开放性。如何在关注和汲取其他哲学传统和智慧资源的同时，又展现自身在当今世界中的独特意义，是中国哲学研究无法回避的问题。第22届国际中国哲学大会旨在推进这方面的思考。

Announcement–Postponement of the 22nd ISCP Conference in Shanghai

Due to the unusual circumstances of COVID and to ensure the success of the Shanghai international conference, the Organizing Committee of the conference has decided to postpone the conference from July 2021 to June 27-30, 2022. The new extended submission deadline will be announced in March 2021.
