THE CHARLES WEI-HSUN FU FOUNDATION-ISCP
2021 ESSAY CONTEST

The Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Foundation and the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) are pleased to announce the 2021 Essay Contest in Chinese Philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought.

Three prizes of $2,000 each are offered for the best essays in the area of Chinese philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought, including two awards for graduate students or junior faculty (within five years of receipt of their Ph.D.), one each in Chinese and English, as well as one award for a senior scholar, whose essay can be in either Chinese or English.
All awardees are required to attend the 2021 Shanghai conference of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (July 5-8, 2021), hosted by East China Normal University, to present their winning essays.

Funding (up to $1000) also will be provided for the winners to travel to the 2021 biennial ISCP conference at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China.

ELIGIBILITY
The contest is open to all ISCP members and scholars at all levels, including independent scholars. However, preference will be given to junior scholars beginning their careers, such as graduate students or junior faculty (within five years of receipt of their Ph.D.), as well as independent scholars of comparable standing, and one senior scholar in need of funding to attend the conference. SUBMISSIONS
All submissions should be sent to iscpecnu2021@sina.com, with “Fu Essay Contest” in the subject line. Decisions will be rendered by separate panels of scholars, drawn from the membership of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy. Previously published papers are not acceptable. Submissions in English should not exceed 5,000 words; submission in Chinese should not exceed 7,000 words. DEADLINE: March 1, 2021.

JUDGING CRITERIA
The purpose of the contest is to encourage young scholars who show promise of making important contributions to the study and development of Chinese philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought, and to fund senior scholars with financial limitations to present their work at ISCP conferences.

Submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria:
1. CREATIVITY: original philosophical insights, such as East-West comparisons
2. COHERENCE: a cogent, well-argued presentation
3. SCHOLARSHIP: competence in dealing with philosophical texts and interpretations

Call for Papers（Deadlines Extended）

The 22nd International Conference of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) will be held at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China during July 5 – 8, 2021. The conference is hosted by ISCP, the Institute of Modern Chinese Thought & Culture at ECNU, the Department of Philosophy at ECNU, and the Shanghai Association of Comparative Study on Chinese-Western Philosophy and Culture. Due to the serious impact of the COVID-19 in the world, the deadlines for submission of papers and for registration will be extended (Please see New Timeline).

Conference Theme
The conference theme is “Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of World Philosophy.” Following the spread of Western philosophy in the East and the encounter between Chinese and Western thought, Chinese philosophy started gaining a global perspective. Broadly speaking, “globalness” includes two significant implications. On the one hand, the accumulated achievements of Chinese philosophical thought may provide constructive theoretical resources for the further advancement of world philosophy; furthermore, in this process Chinese philosophy itself will gradually reveals its global meaning. On the other hand, other philosophical traditions in the world (firstly, the Western philosophical traditions), also provide a broad referencing and perspectival viewpoints for the development of Chinese philosophy. Moreover, both in substance and in form, the other philosophical traditions continuously enable Chinese philosophy to obtain new forms of expression, which alternatively manifests both the creativeness and the openness of Chinese philosophy. An unavoidable issue in the study of Chinese philosophy concerns how to care about, and learn from, the wisdom of other philosophical traditions and resources, while at the same time exhibiting its own unique significance in today’s world. The 22nd conference of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy aims to advance this line of thinking.
Under the general theme of “Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of World Philosophy,” the subthemes include, but are not limited to, the following:

(2) How Does Chinese Philosophy Participate in Worldwide Debates of Different Philosophical Traditions?
(3) Philosophical Reflection on World History

The official dates are July 5-8, 2021. Registration begins on July 4 and conference participants can depart on July 9.

Submission Guidelines
1. The conference languages are both English and Chinese. Unless otherwise indicated, the language of the proposal submitted will be assumed to be the presentation language.
2. English abstracts should be 250 to 300 words; Chinese abstracts should be around 400-500 characters. Abstracts should include paper title, author’s name, affiliation, and email contact information.
3. Panel submissions (including “Author-Meets-Critics” sessions) should include the topic, panelists and their affiliations, a summary of the proposed panel in 300-500 words (English) or 800-1000 characters (Chinese), and an abstract for each of the papers (250–300 words for papers in English and 400-500 words for papers in Chinese).
4. Please submit individual abstracts and panel proposals to: iscpecnu2021@sina.com

Arrangement of Sessions
(1) Each plenary session will have two speakers and will run for a total of 2 hours, including moderation, comments and discussion. Each presentation will consist of a 40-minute speech and 20 minutes for comments and discussion.
(2) Each parallel session will have 3-5 speakers in 2 hours. Generally, the presenting time for each speaker will be 20-25 minutes. The exact time will depend on the precise number of speakers in the session and will be determined by the chair while maintaining sufficient time for discussion.

会议主题
第22届国际中国哲学大会会议的主题是“世界哲学视域中的中国哲学”。随着西方哲学的东渐及中西哲学的相遇，中国哲学开始获得世界性的维度。所谓世界性，宽泛而言，包含二重涵义，一方面，中国哲学所积累的思维成果，可以为世界哲学的进一步发展提供建设性的理论资源，而它本身也将在这一过程中逐渐呈现出世界的意义；另一方面，世界范围内其他哲学传统（首先是西方哲学的传统）也将越来越为中国哲学的发展提供更广阔的参照背景和视域，并在实质的层面与形式的层面使其不断取得新的形态，后者同时从另一个方面展示了中国哲学的生成性与开放性。如何在关注和汲取其他哲学传统和智慧资源的同时，又展现自身在当今世界中的独特意义，是中国哲学研究无法回避的问题。第22届国际中国哲学大会旨在推进这方面的思考。

第22届国际中国哲学大会会议的主题是“世界哲学视域中的中国哲学”。随着西方哲学的东渐及中西哲学的相遇，中国哲学开始获得世界性的维度。所谓世界性，宽泛而言，包含二重涵义，一方面，中国哲学所积累的思维成果，可以为世界哲学的进一步发展提供建设性的理论资源，而它本身也将在这一过程中逐渐呈现出世界的意义；另一方面，世界范围内其他哲学传统（首先是西方哲学的传统）也将越来越为中国哲学的发展提供更广阔的参照背景和视域，并在实质的层面与形式的层面使其不断取得新的形态，后者同时从另一个方面展示了中国哲学的生成性与开放性。如何在关注和汲取其他哲学传统和智慧资源的同时，又展现自身在当今世界中的独特意义，是中国哲学研究无法回避的问题。第22届国际中国哲学大会旨在推进这方面的思考。

CFP: ISCP at the 2021 APA Eastern (January 4-7 in New York City)

The International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) plans to host two-panel sessions at the APA-Eastern convention in NYC from January 4–7 in 2021.

Submissions focusing on any area of Chinese or Comparative philosophy are welcome.

Your submission should include the following information:

5. Approximately 200-300 words Paper Abstract
6. Submission Deadline: June 25, 2020

Currently, all three APA divisions are planning to hold in-person meetings in 2021. While it is our goal to hold in-person meetings in 2021, we are also considering alternative formats, such as virtual meetings, as contingencies in the case that our usual meeting format becomes impossible. Though external forces like the ongoing pandemic affect and inform our plans, your participation is the most critical input for planning any meeting. We encourage you to submit a paper to the division of your choice when submissions open, or to sign up to comment or chair at an upcoming meeting. Regardless of meeting format, the APA is committed to providing the opportunities for intellectual engagement, scholarly collaboration, and professional development that our divisional meetings offer. We will keep you informed as the situation develops and new information becomes available. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out if there are ways we at the APA can support you, your colleagues, and your students through this crisis.

1. There is no international airport in Berne (local spelling with an ‘e’), so you will need to fly to Zurich (one hour by train to Berne), Basel (one hour, with a short bus ride to the station in Basel), or to Geneva (2 hours by train to Berne). In Geneva and Zurich the rail station is in the airport, and very convenient. Tickets can be bought from machines using credit cards. Or else there is also an app (SBB Moble)
2. The railway station in Berne is ten minutes by foot from the conference venue (Unitobler), and five minutes from the town centre where the hotels are.

Chinese philosophy has since its pre-Imperial beginnings been concerned with knowledge – witness Zhuangzi’s argument with Hui Shi about knowing about the happiness of the fish. Furthermore, as this famous story makes clear, there is argument about what people know and what they do not know. And there are things known, in this story, the happiness of the fish, more usually, the character of rulers, the rites, how to act, right and wrong, history, cosmology, the unifying principle of the world, medicine, and mathematics. Yet these aspects of the Chinese tradition have hardly received the attention they deserve from philosophers—questions of what can be known, what the concept of knowledge is taken to be, what role it plays within various conceptual frameworks, as well as the sceptical challenges made to knowledge, beginning, once again, with the Zhuangzi. Scepticism makes room for persuasion, and for clarifying what makes a sound argument, as opposed to mere persuasion. But there are also systematic collections of knowledge (mathematical, medical, cosmological, scientific, for example) which are prominent in the tradition, and they have close connections with philosophy proper. We invite proposals for papers and panels to deepen our understanding of these issues, and carry Chinese philosophy forward into the new millennium.

ISCP 2019 Fu Foundation Young Scholars Essay Award

The Charles Wei-hsun Fu Foundation and the International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) are pleased to announce the 2019 ISCP Essay Contest in Chinese Philosophy.

A total of three prizes of $2,000 each are offered for the best essays in the area of Chinese philosophy, including two awards for graduate students or junior faculty within five years of receipt of the Ph.D., one each in Chinese and English, as well as one award for a senior scholar, whose essay can be in either Chinese or English. Funding up to $1000 also will be provided for the winners to travel to the 2019 biennial ISCP conference at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

All awardees are required to attend the 2019 Bern conference of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy conference to present their winning essays.

ELIGIBILITY

The contest is open to scholars at all levels, including independent scholars. However preference will be given to junior scholars beginning their careers, such as graduate students or assistant professors within five years of graduation, and one senior scholar who require funding to attend the conference.

SUBMISSIONS

All submissions should be sent to iscp2019@philo.unibe.ch, with “Fu Contest Essay” in the subject line. Decisions will be rendered by separate committees of scholars, drawn from the membership of the International Society for Chinese Philosophy.

Previously published papers are not acceptable. Submissions in English should not exceed 5,000 words; submission in Chinese should not exceed 7,000 words. DEADLINE: March 1, 2019.

JUDGING CRITERIA

The purpose of the contest is to encourage young scholars who show promise of making important contributions to the study and development of Chinese philosophy or Asian philosophy related to Chinese thought, and to help senior scholars with financial limitations to present their work at ISCP conferences.

Submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. CREATIVITY original philosophical insights, such as comparative analysis.
2. COHERENCE a cogent, well-argued presentation.
3. SCHOLARSHIP competence in dealing with philosophical texts and interpretations.

傅偉勳基金會與國際中國哲學會（ISCP）很高興宣佈2019年ISCP中國哲學的論文競賽。

The World Congress of Philosophy is organized every five years by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) in collaboration with one of its member societies. The XXIV World Congress will be held in Beijing, China, from August 13 to August 20, 2018. More details can be found at http://wcp2018.pku.edu.cn/yw/index.htm.

The International Society for Chinese Philosophy plans to hold consecutive panels for one or two days at WCP, and welcome all of you to submit your paper and panel proposals. The papers and panels should be consistent with the following themes:
